Axillary bud viability and dry matter production of Poa ligularis in Patagonian grasslands: (with 1 table & 4 figures) Phyton
Souto,CP; Becker,GF; Siffredi,GL; Busso,CA; Sternberg,M.
Poa ligularis Nees is one of the dominant perennial grass species in Patagonian grasslands. This is the first field study which investigated the effects of defoliation frequency on its number of viable axillary buds, and subsequent dry matter production during one growing season. Experiments were arranged in a randomized complete block design. Treatments included one defoliation height (10 cm), from one to five times a year, and undefoliated controls. Bud respiratory activity was examined usingthe tetrazolium test and the vital stain Evan's blue. At the end of the growing season, plants that have been defoliated more than three times showed significatively (p<0.05) lower number of respiratory active buds than unclipped controls. A high defoliation...

Basal defoliation and their influence in agronomic and phytopathological traits in tomato plants Horticultura Brasileira
Silva,Laércio J da; Milagres,Carla do C; Silva,Derly José H da; Nick,Carlos; Castro,João Paulo A de.
The incidence of leaf diseases is one of the main factors limiting the tomato crop production, increasing the production cost due to excessive pesticide application. The basal leaf removal could reduce inoculum sources, disease severity and contribute to reducing the use of pesticide. Aiming to evaluate the efficiency of this practice on the reduction of tomato leaf diseases and the effect in the quality and in the productivity of the tomato plants for in natura consumption, two experiments were carried out to test four levels of basal leaf removal. Basal leaves removal, at fruit harvesting, is efficient in reducing the infected plant area by disease, what can mean smaller disease severity and least inoculum source in the field. Also, the all basal leaf...

ETHEPHON SPRAYS AS A DEFOLIANT IN ‘NIAGARA ROSADA’ VINE SUBJECTED TO TWO CROP PRODUCTION PER YEAR Rev. Bras. Frutic.
COSTA,THIAGO VIEIRA DA; FAÇANHA,RAFAELA VIEIRA; SCARPARE FILHO,JOÃO ALEXIO.
ABSTRACT In climate region Cwa of the State of São Paulo the technique of double cropping the grapevine is possible, however, when it is time for the second pruning of the crop, most of the vine’s leaves are still in the plant, posing the problem that the use of ethephon as a defoliant could increase leaf senescence and improve the vine management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of ethephon spray as a defoliant in the development and production of the ‘Niagara Rosada’ vine when subjected to double cropping, and the influence this bioactivator may have on carbohydrate reserves in the branch. The experiments were conducted in a commercial, non-irrigated area in agricultural years of 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. The length, diameter and...

Feeding preferences of the willow sawfl y Nematus oligospilus (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) for commercial Salix clones Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Loetti,Verónica; Rubio,Alejandra; Bellocq,María Isabel.
Nematus oligospilus Förster (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) is a willow sawfly native to the Northern Hemisphere which became a serious defoliator in willow plantations (Salix spp.) of the Southern Hemisphere after being introduced in the early 1980´s. Studies on host preferences provide useful information for the development of pest management strategies where the willow sawfly may produce tree damage and economic loss. Feeding preferences of N. oligospilus larvae were evaluated in laboratory trials by simultaneously offering leaves from four willow tree clones commonly used in commercial plantations in Argentina (Salix babylonica var sacramenta Hortus, Salix nigra Marsch., S. babylonica L. x Salix alba L. 131-27 and Salix matsudana Koidz. x S. alba L....

Paritsis,Juan; Elgueta,Mario; Quintero,Carolina; Veblen,Thomas T.
Ormiscodes amphimone (Fabricius) is a phytophagous moth species known to severely defoliate woody species in Chile and Argentina. Here we document new records of O. amphimonehost associations emphasizing the role of Nothofagus pumilio as its primary host in our study area. This new record for Argentina is highly significant given the economic importance of N. pumilio as a timber resource and the potential of O. amphimone to generate extensive outbreaks.

Onion yield as affected by plant density, nitrogen level and loss of leaf area Phyton
Siliquini,OA; Orioli,GA; Lobartini,JC.
Onion (Allium cepa) is an important horticulture crop because of its value as a food with a long shelf life being a relatively non-perishable product. It is very helpful to understand the growth response of the seeded onion crop to conduct appropriate field practices in attaining the highest or optimum yields. A three year field experiment was conducted using a variety of onion Valcatorce INTA, in a randomized block design with five replicates. Treatments were two plant densities and three rates of N application. The bulb growth followed a classical sigmoid curve. During the rapid growing period, the crop had the greatest leaf area (LA) with at least six leaves per plant. Increasing plant density increased yield in kg/ha, but decreased bulb size....

Quantitative analysis of two important epidemiological features of the common bean: Phaeoisariopsis griseola pathosystem Trop. Plant Pathol.
Willocquet,Laetitia; Allorent,Delphine; Savary,Serge.
This work quantifies two important epidemiological features of the bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)/Phaeoisariopsis griseola pathosystem. The first is the effect of the number of nights of leaf wetness on infection efficiency. Infection efficiency was below 10% when inoculated leaflets were exposed to less than two nights of leaf wetness. Optimum infection efficiencies were obtained after three to four nights of leaf wetness, at about 50%. Further nights of leaf wetness did not increase the infection efficiency. The second feature quantified is the relative rate of leaflet defoliation for varying levels of angular leaf spot severity. It increased with disease severity according to a logarithm-like curve, and a relative rate of 0.23 day-1 was estimated for a...

Role of nonproductive tillers as transient sinks of assimilates in wheat Bragantia
Fioreze,Samuel Luiz; Michelon,Luiz Henrique; Turek,Thaís Lemos; Drun,Robson Pelissari; Dalorsaleta,Julio César Sbardella.
ABSTRACT Although source–sink relationships in wheat are well studied, the performance of tillers as transient sinks is still unclear, especially under stress conditions. Thus, this work aimed to study the yield relationships of wheat stems in contrasting genotypes as affected by tiller treatment under stress conditions. Two experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions using BRS Guamirim (high tillering) and BRS Parrudo (low tillering) wheat cultivars. Four tillering treatments were applied on late tillers in the first growing season (2016) and three in the second (2017): (i) free-tillering, (ii) detillering, (iii) physical suppression (only in the first season) and (iv) “spikes removal”. The main stem and the first four emitted tillers were...

Tiller emission and dry mass accumulation of wheat cultivars under stress Scientia Agricola
Almeida,Milton Luiz de; Sangoi,Luís; Merotto Jr.,Aldo; Alves,Antônio Carlos; Nava,Itamar Cristiano; Knopp,Armando Cristiano.
Tillers are important structures for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) because they contribute to increase the number of spikes per area, enhancing grain yield. Stresses during plants early growth have a sizable effect on tiller production. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of stresses induced by unevenness in sowing depth, defoliation and differences in soil pH on tiller emission and dry mass accumulation of wheat cultivars. The experiments were carried out in Lages, Southern Brazil, during the winter growing seasons of 2000 and 2001. They were performed in square boxes, under natural conditions of radiation and irrigation. In the first experiment, five types of sowing depths were tested to simulate different systems of unevenness in...
